Gentlemen,

Welcome to the Spring edition of the B&B. Let’s hope the deluges of recent times are behind us and that sunshine prevails for a good while.

The next OBU luncheon is Tuesday, November 18th, 2014 to be held at the Rugby Club. The 10.30am Mass at St. Patricks, Church Hill will precede the luncheon. The Class of 1964 are still celebrating their half-century since leaving Darlo.

In the last edition, we advised of the Marist College Canberra Foundation Lunch on 17 October, which will have a Darlinghurst Old Boys’ focus. The former Minister for Defence, Hon. Brendan Nelson will be speaking as special guest, which is most appropriate in this first centenary year of WW1. For those wishing to attend the function , please find forms enclosed. For an insight into the passion Bill Duncan experienced while visiting the school, please click here. To register your interest, please send your booking form (enclosed) to Bill Halcro, OBU Secretary, 20 Paterson St, Matraville 2036 of email an advice to darlo@6mins.com

The Darlo historian, Scott Coleman [MSC Canberra], has once again made more notable contributions to our records of distinguished MB Darlinghurst Old Boys:

Flying Officer Jim Comans DFC and Bar

Capt. Reginald Nowland MC

This is reading not to be missed, of the heroism by members of our fraternity.

Both Gavan Young [LC’43] and Bill Halcro [LC’49] welcomed great, grandchildren into the world. Gavan, who recently moved from Abbotsford to Riverview, welcomed young William, while Bill welcomed Sophia, his fourth great grandchild.

Sports: It’s approaching that time of the year again, with the Chippendale Cup looming so golfers, please contact Jay Robertson [LC’59} to register your interest, with a mention of a preferred course and your preferred dates. You can email Jay at jrober42@optusnet.com.au Both the course and dates will be announced after a decision has been taken on preferences.

Tony Morrissey [HSC’65], stands up to be counted as he speaks out against the soaring costs of education under the Baird government in an article published in the Southern Courier, Aug 25, 2014. See Article.

The historic statement of rights by children, “The Children’s Manifesto”, continues to grow with support in an increasing number of countries. Br Paul Murphy continues his globe trotting as he advises, “I’m thanking various donors, Foundations and the like who have assisted me in purchasing the property for my street kids, and building a new purpose-built halfway home to rehabilitate the kids and their families to live successfully and in Hope.” Those seeking further information and the latest news on the centre to assist disadvantaged children in the Philippines, which Br. Paul founded, can follow the link Kuya Center or simply go to the website at http://www.kuyacenter.org

Here we have a photo of “Murf” taken just outside of Santiago de Compostela after a ten-day, arduous trek with his arthritis! This sign is about 3 kms from the Cathedral where Mass is offered for pilgrims at midday each day.

In Memoriam:

Vale Peter Thompson

Colleen Thompson writes to advise us of the passing of Peter. “I lost my very lovely man, Peter Thompson, on the 7th June, 2014. He fought a very long battle with prostate cancer and eventually lost his fight. He never lost his sense of humour or the love of his family. We had a requiem mass in the town of Bowraville, where we have lived for the last 15 years. They tell me that there is great sorrow where there was great love and I truly believe that. Thanks and may God bless you all.

Colleen Thompson and the family of Peter Thompson.

Vale Bill Kirwin [LC’46].

Jim Brassil kindly advised of the passing of Bill and his notice appeared in the SMH on 25-8-2014.

Vale Don Simpson [LC’46]

Don’s wife called the OBU to advise of the passing of Don. He was 85 years old.

Lost contact:

We have received three Return-to-Sender advices so if anybody can assist with updated contacts for the following Old Boys, please advise Bill Halcro: Frank Richardson of Beacon Hill, Paul Bernasconi of Narrabeen and Colin Jenkins of Walcha.

Humour:

Peter Clarke [HSC’68] passes on some advice on How To Maintain a Healthy Level of Insanity in Retirement.

1. At Lunch Time, Sit In Your Parked Car With Sunglasses on and point a Hair Dryer At Passing Cars...watch 'em Slow Down!

2. On all your cheque stubs, write 'For Marijuana'!

3. Skip down the street Rather Than Walk and see how many looks you get.

4. Order a Diet Water whenever you go out to eat, with a serious face.

5. Sing Along At The Opera.

6. When The Money Comes Out of The ATM, Scream 'I Won! I Won!'

7. When Leaving the Zoo, start Running towards the Car Park, Yelling 'Run For Your Lives! They're Loose!'

8. Tell Your Children over dinner: 'Due to the economy, we are going to have to let one of you go...

9. Pick up a box of condoms at the pharmacy, go to the counter and ask where the fitting room is…

And The Final Way To Keep A Healthy Level Of Insanity:

10. Go to a large Department stores fitting room and yell out: THERE IS NO TOILET PAPER IN HERE!
