Gentlemen,

It’s official. The Marist Brothers High School Old Boys Union still exists. The OBU was neither dissolved nor wound up. Fortunately, due to a simple error, the decision to dissolve it taken on July 11, 2011 was not only unconstitutional but legally invalid.

Opinions were received from 3 lawyers which were unanimous, two of whom are from Old Boys. One emanating from the meeting last month of senior Old Boys, that the decision to dissolve the OBU was not valid, consistent with that emanating from the MB Darlinghurst Alumni Assn. that the decision was “legally invalid”.

The Old Boys’ Union continues with what many fine men have given, namely  an abundance of creative time and effort to ensure, for almost a century: that the OBU prevails, to support Marist causes and the Old Boys fraternity.

Regarding that commitment, the name “Br. Murphy”, synonymous with the OBU, continues to live on, with Br. Paul Murphy joining the OBU Committee, carrying on the Marist legacy of Br. John Murphy. Mark Sinclair has extended a warm welcome to Br. Paul (aka “Murf”) on behalf of all the OBU. “Murf” has spent most of the last 2 decades working with homeless children in the Philippines. The book “You’d Better Bloody Believe It” is a fund-raiser for the home “KuyaCenter”, built to assist those children, and all are encouraged to purchase a copy. In keeping with OBU priorities of assisting Marist causes, a website has been established for KuyaCenter which gives contact details for how else we may assist. The purchase-the-book request had hardly hit the Darlo website as Blue Gallagher was the first to order a copy.

Blue has also found an invaluable piece of OBU memorabilia at the markets recently: an engraved medallion in the size and shape of the school hat badge presented to A. Keogh for the Best Intermediate Certificate Pass in 1934 by the Old Boys Union.

At the last OBU meeting, Mark Sinclair resigned as OBU Vice-President to take up the post of OBU (Acting) President and Larry Hensby agreed to remain as Secretary until the Annual OBU meeting on July 11th, 2012, whereafter he will remain on the Committee. Several amendments were made to the OBU constitution, given that no annual contributions have been sought since 2010, even though some Old Boys continued to forward them regardless. (See Amendments)

Regarding the Annual Darlo OBU Mass and Luncheon, RSVPs are to be in by 25th of June. It’s on July 11th 2012, so if you haven’t already notified of your intent to be there, please do so as soon as possible.

There’s only a few weeks left to book a seat or a table. Mass is being celebrated by Fr. Paul Chandler and Fr. Pat McAuliffe at 10.30am at St. Patricks, Church Hill followed by the luncheon at the Rugby Club at midday.

Also those who are interested in an OBU Golf Day or an OBU Barefoot Bowls Day in December to coincide with the luncheon, please feel free to commit early, with your preference.

·         Fr. Denis Hallinan O.P. will be unable to concelebrate the OBU mass this year as he’ll be enjoying a summer in Italy, on assignment to Rome.

·        John Chippendale is making a healthy recovery after radiation & chemotherapy on his throat.

·        John McCauley recently celebrated his 80th ~ Congrats!

·        Alan Willoughby no doubt sees him as a youngster, as he’ll be celebrating his 92nd in August.

Please be sure to check Special Requests on the Main Page. Prayers are requested for Fr. Pat McMaugh and John Gilfoyle, both seriously ill.

    Servo fidem,

    Kym Derriman
